Interview with Misty Harvey

This week's interview features author, Misty Harvey. Her first novel, Creatures of the Damned, is a perfect mix paranormal and horror. Want to know more about Creatures of the Damned? Here's the pitch...

How can you run from something that lives inside of you? Lynx harbors a much darker side, a side that continually calls for the fulfillment of death. Betrayed by those that should have loved him unconditionally, he has grown distant and cold to the world that surrounds him. Giving into the beast within has always been an easy feat. It’s learning the delicate balance between his sides that is the constant battle. The women he deems worthy enough to grace his bed are few and far between. However, he finds small satisfaction in the dance as the beast calls for a more primal existence, one that could prove to shake the entire world Lynx has created for himself. Will he ever find the one woman that will dance with the beast in the moonlight? And be strong enough to tame its wild nature? Even as he wonders if he’ll find a life mate, his world turns upside down with the betrayal of a lifetime. Bringing Lynx firmly into the center fold of a battle that has been centuries in the making. The sides are difficult to decipher and with a history like Lynx’s he questions who he can truly trust when it comes down to the nitty gritty of it all. When the battle all really begins to unfold, Lynx realizes he may have bitten off more than he can chew this time.

Tricia: It is truly a pleasure to have you on my site, Misty. Before we talk about your work, can you tell us a bit about yourself? When did you begin writing?

Misty: Probably since birth. *giggles* Actually, I picked up the habit of writing when I was young. It was a way to torture a younger sister and nephew. I remember countless hours dreaming up the scariest things I could think of with my oldest nephew and then we’d create these stories to tell them when parents weren’t around.

I didn’t start seriously thinking about myself as a writer until I became an adult. I knew it was all I wanted to do with my life though. I wanted to create these worlds filled with characters, and then to share that with others.

I've always felt a certain draw to the night, and the creatures that live there. So writing about these beings has always been easy for me. That isn't to say there isn't always a certain level of mysticism in each experience. I've lived with the characters of my books, heard their tales, experienced their up and downs with them.

Now I share it all with you, my readers. Come join me in a walk in the moonlight. Let us experience a new way of life that occurs after sunset.

Tricia: Is Creatures of the Damned your first novel?

Misty: It is my first published book and I’m so excited about it still. I find myself getting butterflies in my stomach to this day every time I see my name on the book. I don’t think that will ever go away.

Tricia: How did you come up with the idea for the book?

Misty: Creatures of the Damned originally came to me about 5 years ago. I had woken up from a nightmare, and I wrote it down. I didn’t think anything of it at the time. I had two children to get ready for school and written nightmares were a common occurrence for me at the time. I just kept doing what Moms do and took them to school. It was on the way home when I was walking that it all started to flow together. It still took me another five years after that to actually sit down and write it. Let me tell you, by the time I sat to write it, it’s nothing like I originally thought it would be.

Tricia: Lynx is not an ordinary vampire. What sets him apart?

Misty: No, he’s not. Lynx is as original as they come I suppose. His vampire half and human half work as two different personalities. The vampire half, The Beast, wants a more primal existence. The human half, Lynx, wants to fall in love and have a family. Lynx doesn’t even realize The Beast exists. It was a fascinating dynamic to explore.

Tricia: Does Lynx have a love interest in this book? What are the special challenges they face in order to be together?

Misty: He actually has many love interests in the book. It would depend on which personality took the interest to the woman. That would set a whole different dynamic to the relationship. The hardest one I created became Lynx/The Beast’s mate. I say it that way, cause it’s not until much later in the book. Lucia and Lynx/The Beast have a hate-hate relationship at first. There are a lot of challenges that come their way, some stemming from Charlie, Lynx’s supposed mate at the time. The biggest challenge of all is dealing with Lynx’s daughter, Harlot. I won’t go into many details, but it’s definitely no easy romance on any level.

Tricia: What project or projects are you currently working on?

Misty: I think the easier question is what projects am I not working on. *giggles* I’m balancing a horror novel that is being difficult, and working on the second book in the DeWinter series. I also have a hush hush project going on with Amy Winfield. It’s called ‘Taking the World by Storm’. It will be a lot of fun if we can get it up and running soon. All this I balance when I’m playing wife, mother, and caretaker to animals.

Tricia: How do you balance writing with your busy daily life?

Misty: Ah, this question. I’d love to say that it is super easy and I just keep on a schedule, that would be a lie. Most of the time if I’m struck with the writing bug I either do it at 4am when the family is all still sleeping or try to get bits written while they’re at school. I’m very fortunate in the fact that my husband is a huge supporter and will give me that free time to grind out a few words if I just let him know. I think it helps also that my children are 15, 13, and 10. They can pretty much occupy their own time…well most of it.

Tricia: Where can my readers go to learn more about your work, or to purchase a copy of Creatures of the Damned?

Misty: Thank you so much for this opportunity. Thank you readers for letting me share with you the first in The DeWinter bloodline. I really had a whole lot of fun. If you want to learn more or read the first book in The DeWinter Series you can go here.

  1. This sounds like a very interesting book Misty and one I will look at when I clear some of my kindle backlog.

Best of luck with your writing. I don't have kids (by choice) but I still find there are not enough hours in the day for writers.

  2. Thank you, Melanie. I'm so glad you came by. It's always nice to meet other authors. I doubt there is ever enough hours in a day for any writer. I find during the summer I keep crazy hours just to find quiet to write and my sleep drops to 4 hours. My coffee intake increases and I thank Folgers continuously for the added pep to my day. *giggle*
