Interview with Cynthia Sax

Today, we're visiting with Cynthia Sax. She's here to tell us about He Watches Me, a sexy novella that's been listed by Star Magazine as a recommended Summer Read. Before we get started with the interview, let's have a look at the blurb for He Watches Me:

She desires to be seen.

He wants to watch.

Anna Sampson has a naughty secret. Every night, she slips into her neighbor’s yard and swims naked in his pool. She fantasizes that the dynamic young billionaire watches her nightly nude aquatics, his brilliant green eyes gleaming with lust.

She discovers this isn’t pure fantasy. Gabriel Blaine has been watching her via his security cameras, and now that he has returned to L.A., he doesn’t plan to stop. That’s all he wants—to watch. Anna knows she shouldn’t allow him and she certainly shouldn’t want more, but she craves Blaine’s attention, needing his gaze fixed on her body.

He Watches Me is Part One of The Seen Trilogy and is available on Amazon

Tricia: Can you tell us a little about yourself?

Cynthia: I’m Cynthia Sax. I write contemporary, SciFi, and paranormal erotic romance short stories and novellas for Avon Impulse, Ellora’s Cave, Changeling Press, and Loose Id. I love scarred heroes, my wonderful hubby and Nutella, not necessarily in that order.

Tricia: When did you begin writing?

Cynthia: I’ve always written. I write because I must. Writing is a part of me. I submit my stories to publishers because I like sharing my stories and because selling my stories allows me to spend more time writing.

Tricia: Describe your writing process. Do you plot or write by the seat of your pants? When and where do you write?

Cynthia: I’m a pantser, a writer who writes by the seat of her pants, with no plot. I write stories to find out what happens next. I usually start with a premise or hook and a solid understanding of my characters. That’s it.

Tricia: Can you tell us about your most recent release?

Cynthia: He Watches Me tells the romance of Anna, a not-so-innocent-yet-virginal exhibitionist and Blaine, her mysterious billionaire neighbor. Every night, Anna has been hopping the fence, stripping naked in her neighbor’s backyard, and skinny dipping in his pool. She fantasizes he watches her.

This isn’t a fantasy. Blaine has been watching his sexy trespasser every night via his security cameras. Now he’s finally returned to L.A. and he plans to continue watching Anna… from a poolside seat.

Tricia: How did you get the idea for the book?

Cynthia: One hot summer night, I was hanging out on my deck, looking at my neighbor’s gorgeous pool with envy. The moon hung low, reflecting in the water. There was no one around. I was tempted to jump the fence and jump in the pool.

I thought about who WOULD jump the fence and swim in a stranger’s pool. This is how He Watches Me starts.

Tricia: If you could recommend just one of your books to my readers, which book would you choose?

Cynthia: I’d recommend He Watches Me as a reader’s first Cynthia Sax story. Star Magazine chose He Watches Me as one of its Fab Five, naming it a hot summer read. This contemporary erotic romance novella (approximately 80 pages) is one of the best stories I’ve ever written.

Tricia: Of all your characters, which one is your favorite? Why?

Cynthia: I dreamed of Blaine, the green-eyed billionaire hero of He Watches Me, for months after I finished his story. There’s something about him that stays with readers. Maybe it is his closed doors. We never do find out everything about him.

Tricia: What was the most challenging aspect of writing your book?

Cynthia: He Watches Me is written in first person from Anna’s point of view. We never hear Blaine’s thoughts and he isn’t a big talker. To convey Blaine’s emotions, I had to pay closer attention to what he does and how he does it.

Tricia: What would you like to tell us about your book or your writing that someone wouldn’t discover during a casual review of your blurb or website?

Cynthia: Although The Seen Trilogy (He Watches Me, He Touches Me, He Claims Me) is a serial, every story has a beginning and an ending. I split the romance of Blaine and Anna into three stories because these were the natural breaks in their relationship.

Tricia: What is your primary goal as an author?

Cynthia: Romance writers sell love and optimism and hope. That’s our job. My goal is to make at least one reader happy. Yes, this is a career so there are financial concerns but there are MUCH easier ways to make money. I only submit a story for publishing if I think other reading buddies will enjoy it.

Tricia: Which authors have inspired your writing?

Cynthia: Romanceland is one of the most helpful environments existing for aspiring writers. The always fabulous Christine d’Abo has helped me add more sizzle to my sex scenes. J.K. Coi is the master of emotion, pushing me to amplify emotions in my scenes. Amy Ruttan is a great writer to bounce plot ideas off of. Wylie Snow keeps me on my chosen career path as it is so easy to get distracted by options. There are a zillion other writers who have helped me. I could write a novella listing them all.

Tricia: What projects are you currently working on?

Cynthia: I’m working on the follow-up story to The Seen Trilogy (He Watches Me, He Touches Me, He Claims Me). The hero of this yet-to-be-titled story is Henley. We meet this mysterious man in He Claims Me.

Tricia: What advice would you offer to new or aspiring authors?

Cynthia: Success is a team sport. It is VERY difficult to be successful in this business working on our own. If you need help, ASK. Be conscious of the other writer’s time but ask! I’d send writers I admire a page, not a chapter or a complete manuscript. Often the writers could pinpoint my problems by merely reading that page. I’d then apply the lessons to my entire manuscript.
