Interview with Cassandre Dayne

Today, I'm honored to introduce Cassandre Dayne, an author for whom I have a tremendous amount of respect. Cassandre is a multi-published author who writes under different personas. She is the queen of erotic tales. She's here to talk to us about her writing, particularly her On Becoming His series. Before we begin the interview, let's have a look at the first book in the series...

Jezebel Waters, Jessie to her friends, had everything in her life that she could ever want. From a successful career as a top-level executive, a hefty salary and fabulous friends, she had the world in the palm of her hand – except for the right man in her life. In the back of her mind she knew she was missing something and the realization was almost terrifying. She craved being under the command of a powerful Dom, but how the hell could she admit to anyone what she considered her kinky needs?

Resigned to living a very vanilla life, she entered into several relationships and every one of them failed miserably. Jessie gave up on love – until she met Luke Brennan. From his gorgeous chocolate-laced skin to his quiet yet powerful demeanor, Jessie was hooked on learning more. Growing close, when he admitted his own needs, she knew she’d found everything she’d been searching for her entire life. While Luke wanted nothing more than to own her, he was hesitant to enter into the agreement until she completely understood the life she would lead as a collared woman.

While she was more than eager to learn, she remained terrified of the girl inside and of her dark hungers. Join Jessie on an emotional journey as she delves deep into her psyche, not only beginning to understand her willingness to become Luke’s in every way, but also to comprehend exactly what the new beginning would entail -- trust and control. Through poems and prose, this story is just the beginning for both…

Q: Can you tell us a little about yourself and when you began writing?

A: I began writing when I was four, believe it or not. I consider myself a wicked girl, enjoying the rather wicked persona as Cassandre Dayne.

Q: What genre or genres do you write?

A: I’m an author who writes in several genres, including erotic, horror, crime drams and thrillers. I also write poetry.

Q: Have you received a lot of criticism for choosing to write erotica?

A: Oh you bet and when you add in that I write a lot of interracial as well as same sex, might as well burn me on the cross.

Q: What is your opinion on the recent censorship occurring on Amazon and Kobo?

A: GROWL – do NOT ask me what I think about censorship. What’s so sad to me isn’t that this is about authors who are caught in the middle of this ridiculous fiasco, but about the wanna be authors who may look at Big Brother and give up their dream. We have to be much more tolerant in our society. We have to enjoy all walks of life and humans as well as art or we might as well go back to the cave man days.

Q: How have you been affected by this?

A: Had several books pulled because I used a company as a middle man distributor. I also self pub some of my books and every single one is still down off Kobo.

Q: Have other authors been supportive, or has this situation served to drive a wedge between indie authors?

A: Mostly supportive but as with all walks of life, people hate conflict so many refuse to take up the cause per say.

Q: I’ve read On Becoming His and was struck by how this book really changed my perception of a BDSM relationship. Can you tell my readers about this story and how you got the idea for the series?

A: On Becoming His is my baby. I honestly think it started out for two reasons. One is that I realized I’d been writing a lot of personal poems that were very much D/s and two, when I began researching BDSM and ultimately D/s I realized how much I craved the lifestyle. I finally admitted to myself that I am a submissive woman, passionate in many things. I wanted to share my feelings as a strong woman who was considering the lifestyle and all the emotional aspects she goes through. Subsequently I wanted to make certain that I presented the Dom as a man who was compassionate and loving, giving to a fault yet questions his role. There are of course dark secrets.

Q: The format for the story is very unique with a blend of narrative and poetry. Do you like to experiment with different writing styles? Or, do you just let the character dictate how their story will be told?

A: I like experimenting but the truth is I don’t try. I just write. I dream in color and often times stories just come to me in dreams. I love mixing up the writing style and genre. I don’t want to be labeled as one style of writer.

Q: I understand you collaborated with Benjamin Russell in order to get a male perspective? Was this your first collaboration? Are you planning any future projects with Benjamin?

A: There is a back story with Benjamin and I and sadly I doubt we’ll be able to write more together but I can tell you that I loved working with him, so made Luke around the man Benjamin is and that alone brings Luke to life. I tingle just thinking about it.

Q: Have you received positive feedback on the series? Do you feel you’ve helped educate people by writing this series?

A: By far I’ve received much more in the way of joyful comments. Women and men alike had told me they thought I was writing the story about their lives and desires. That is the best compliment I’ve ever received.

Q: If you could recommend just one of your books to my readers, which book would you choose?

A: No doubt in my mind On Becoming His.

Q: Of all your characters, which was the most challenging to write? Why?

A: Now that is a tough one. I think writing as DH Black and Enslaved. The female cop in that one has to face horrors and a situation that caused that book to be pulled from the shelves in the Pay Pal censorship last yet. It’s back on the shelves but… Her character challenged me as an author and as a woman.

Q: What is your primary goal as an author?

A: Mmm – to entertain my readers in a way that is both fantasy mixed with reality of certain things I write about such as BDSM. I want them to see the truth behind the myth.

Q: What projects are you currently working on?

A: My oh my. I am working on the third in the On Becoming His collection called On Becoming Her Sir. I have two m/m pieces for Rebel Ink Press – including the second in the HOT BDSM m/m thriller series – Sin City. And the third in the Bad Things were-tiger trilogy for Naughty Nights Press. I am also updating 30 books that were pulled on purpose for lack of sales, revamping, recovering and putting that back up for readers to enjoy.
