Diverse Book Tours is stopping by Authors to Watch and they've brought a very special guest. Niko, the main character in the novel by Kayti Nika Raet, is here to speak with us. Let me tell you - it wasn't easy to get her to talk, but with me, the author, and the Diverse Book Tour peeps twisting her arm, we finally persuaded her to answer a few questions before she dashed off to vanquish some Slithers. Don't know what a Slither is? Read on...
So, Niko, for those of us meeting you for the first time, what can you tell us about your world? Looks pretty crappy ;p
The hotel was nice. Everything else could be better. There are lots of things that can kill you out here; the rain is corrosive and can burn through almost anything; Slithers eat you, preferably while you're still alive. Starvation. Disease.
I think we can change that though. At least, most of it.
That bat you have is pretty interesting. What is it used for?
Killing Slithers. (You mean it can be used for something else?)
Holy Crap! What the heck was that (Assuming a slither just ran by, ignoring us hopefully!)?
That was Ben. He's probably hoping I'll say something about him. I'm not.
Did you ever have any goals that didn't involve killing Slithers?
My goal was never to just kill Slithers, my goal was to survive, to make sure our water lasted till the end of the week, to find enough food so that my brothers wouldn't starve. To keep breathing. Slithers happened to get in the way of those goals, luckily, I was good at killing them.
Now that I'm in the city things are different. There's clean water EVERYWHERE, and food too. The threat of Slithers is contained, which means I don't have to focus on solely survival anymore, but Slithers don't only attack the cities, they attack everyone, and Outsiders are more vulnerable towards it. Shouldn't they be protected too?
I notice you don't like dresses! What you got against dresses?
They're pretty but they aren't very practical. If it's long, it tangles up in your legs and a Slither eats you. If it's short, water might splash on your legs and the acid will burn you. Jeans are fine, no need to die just to look pretty.
Any special boy toys in your life that arent dead? Got your eye on anyone special?
What does your favorite hobby involve?
I like to paint. It's relaxing.
If you could change anything about your life right now, what would it be?
Ben says that's cheating. Fine...
I would like to have my brother back, for the fire to never have happened. If I could only have one thing, I would like to have that.
Who do you trust most in the world?
You seem to be in a hurry! Where are you off to? Where can we find you if we're looking for you!
I'm headed to another city, Cherai. Hopefully, everything turns out all right and we don't encounter any Slithers.
We'll encounter some Slithers.
Have you ever... Niko? NIKO? Sorry, folks. She's gone. Hopefully, we'll catch up with her again one of these days. I'd like to thank Niko for (reluctantly) answering a few questions, and I'd like to thank Kayti Nika Raet and Diverse Book Tours for stopping by. If you'd like to learn more about Niko, please keep reading...

Publisher: Kayti Nika Raet
Genre: YA, Post-Apocalyptic, Thriller, Romance
One can live for several weeks without food but only a few days without water, a fact seventeen year old Niko is only too aware of as she struggles to provide for her two younger brothers in a post apocalyptic landscape where the rain burns like acid, food grows increasingly scarce and any Slither that crosses her path is laid low before it can sink its teeth into her.
Then one night everything she'd ever worked for and loved is consumed by a raging fire, leaving her with one brother missing, the other dead and herself gravely injured.
She's rescued by the Rose Circle, a rogue group of Slither hunters. They sneak her into Amaryllis City, a decadent metropolis where those able to pay the exorbitant entrance fee live a life of relative ease.
But for Niko, Amaryllis City is not the haven she grew up believing it would be and her unique abilities as a Slither hunter make her a particularly visible target to a city with hopes of experimentation, replication and other nasty bits.
All Niko ever wanted to do was find her baby brother, but that's proving to be harder than expected.
